Tucked in a quaint shophouse in a quiet corner of Boon Tat Street, Vanilla Bar & Cafe serves Japanese fusion comfort food, premium coffee and breakfast all day. Food critic Swee of Make Your Calories Count checks out the cafe near Raffles Place

A cosy dining space with minimalist approach, it was packed by the time we arrived at about 7pm. Only the door seat that was pretty cramped was available.

Nonetheless, service was prompt and we didn't have to wait long for our dishes to arrive.

vanilla_bar_pulled_pork_sandwichPulled Pork Sandwich ($11.90)

Its Pulled Pork Sandwich was a classic done well. It was toasted perfectly with tender pork shreds tossed in BBQ sauce. We enjoyed the savouriness of the dish, and this was simple, comfort food.

vanilla_bar_boston_lobster_2Aburi Boston Lobster Linguine ($23.90)
We were wow-ed by its presentation as we weren't quite expecting a half-sized lobster with shell, and the crustacean came fresh, topped with mentaiko sauce. What could be improved on would be the linguine though, as it was pretty bland and dry.

vanilla_bar_ribeye_steakRibeye Steak with Shiraz Reduction ($18.90)

I'm usually skeptical about steaks, especially when this paled in comparison with the Boston Lobster that was first served. Slicing this medium-done steak up changed my impression though, despite it being pretty thin. What managed to impress was the accompanying Shiraz reduction, that came with a slight tang and right salinity to complement the steak perfectly.

vanilla_bar_spam_friesSpam Fries ($10.90)

A tad too thick, this seemed more like home-made luncheon meat cut into strips then pan-fried instead of the thinly sliced fries we were expecting. And it was certainly overpriced for such a dish!

vanilla_bar_mentaiko_crabMentaiko Baked Crab ($10.90)

I'm a fan of mentaiko and I could do with a more generous serving of that. It had too much of a 'fishy' taste to it, putting us off at the first mouthful.

vanilla_bar_durian_creme_bruleeDurian Creme Brûlée ($8.80)

It came in a small plate, and torching it meant warming the entire dish and I wasn't exactly a fan of warm creme brûlées. The durian taste was just nice though, not too overwhelming for a dessert, though its portion didn't quite justify its price.

Word of caution -- don't try the milkshakes as they are sugar-loaded and the strawberry milkshake simply reminded us of meiji strawberry.

With all its hits and misses, it's quite a good spot for some chat over dinner and conveniently located enough to hop off to somewhere else for drinks.
