Around this time each year, a popular questions that many investors would often ask is – WOULD THERE BE A NEW YEAR RALLY IN THE FORTHCOMING NEW YEAR? The best answer to this question is still – “YOUR GUESS IS AS GOOD AS MINE”.

As is the usual case, those who could get the answer right would be well rewarded (regardless of whether they are Bulls or Bears). We know that in the stock market place –
Bulls make money
Bears make money
Pigs get slaughtered
Chickens make little or no money for being easily frightened off by bearish noises.

May all readers of this forum get the answer right this time and be amply rewarded.

My guess is that a New Year Rally in January 2014 is a high probability taking into account that -
1. The STI has been consolidating for 3 months between 3,100 and 3,250 and could be waiting for a catalyst (point 2 below) to move up;
2. New Year rally has become somewhat a tradition to many “big boys”, “manipulators”, speculators, gamblers and others to look forward to, in making some “pocket” or “angpow” money.
3. Unless new unexpected bad news surface during the next few weeks to 31st December, the existing bad news should have been largely discounted or factored into the stock prices leaving the market receptive towards any bullish overture.

rally or really ?

Will U.S. Public Debt Reach $22 Trillion by Feb. 2014?

How much debt can the U.S. government rack up by the next debt ceiling deadline on Feb. 7, 2014? At the current spending pace of $375 billion per week, U.S. public debt would reach $22.70 trillion.

Observer2 – Agree that if STI is abt the same at end yr, then it will likely rally early next yr as the syndicates are eagerly eyeing our yr end bonuses LOL. Whether the rally will sustain will depend on earnings growth. As for Dow, it is already at all time record high, so may consolidate next yr. At present, both the US recovery and local economy are still looking good, but in the stock market, expect the unexpected. Just make sure we don’t lose back our hard earned capital gain after taking the risk of fully invested last yr.

Observer2 - How about this for real gambling ? If this report is true, Bitcoin went up to 82 times in last 12 mths LOL. Are there any other “investment” which went up more in a yr ? Definitely not for the faint hearted.

Hi, Relaxing,
Would you wish someone had given you a Bitcoin as New Year angpow when it was worth less than ten dollars?. Below is a brief history of Bitcoin from Wikipedia –
“First mentioned in a 2008 paper published under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto, Bitcoin became operational in early 2009. The currency had early technical problems such as a 2009 exploit that allowed the creation of unlimited bitcoins.
In 2011 the value of one Bitcoin rapidly rose from about $0.30 to $32, before falling back down $2.
Bitcoin began attracting media attention in late 2012, and numerous news articles have been written about it. In 2013, some mainstream services such as OkCupid, Baidu, Reddit, Humble Bundle and Foodler began accepting it.That year also saw the first interventions by law enforcement. Assets belonging to the Mt.Gox exchange were seized, and the Silk Road drugs market was shut down.
As of Monday 18 November 2013, The price of Bitcoin has surpassed $600. Mt. Gox pegged the price at $599 Monday morning (ET), though it had fluctuated throughout the day. "There are now about 12 million bitcoins in existence. At $600, the market cap for the currency is around $7.2 billion."

If the value of an object can rise to astronomical level over a relatively short time, I believe it can come down the same manner. Anyone dabbling in this must be prepared to die of a “heart attack” or “go bust”.
